Facebook Messenger 2.0 for iPhone brings new design to conversations, swipe left for friends list

Facebook Messenger 20 for iPhone brings new design to conversations, swipe left for friends list

Facebook debuted the new look of its dedicated Messenger app on Android last week and and just as promised, now it's available on the iPhone as well. Facebook Messenger 2.0 brings a new SMS-style bubble layout to conversations, a swipe left gesture to reveal one's friends list and the ability to push the friends you message most to the top of the list. As mentioned along with the Android update this is a part of a new release schedule cycle that should see updates arriving every 4 - 8 weeks. That means you can mark your calendar for the next refresh if this is your social network of choice, but for now just grab the latest version from iTunes.

Minor sharp as Braves shut out Mets

By GEORGE HENRY

updated 10:17 p.m. ET Sept. 29, 2012

ATLANTA (AP) - Mike Minor wasn't sure if he will have another turn in the rotation, so he wanted to end the regular season impressively.

Minor pitched 6 1-3 sharp innings to win his fifth straight decision, Martin Prado and Jason Heyward each had an RBI and the Atlanta Braves beat the New York Mets 2-0 on Saturday night.

"I had a lot of nerves tonight," he said. "I don't think it was because of the crowd. It was like, `OK, this could possibly be my last start.' I don't know if I'll start again. I might come out of the bullpen, where ever they need me."

Chipper Jones, who played his next-to-last regular-season game at Turner Field, was hitless in four at-bats.

Craig Kimbrel earned his 41st save of in 44 chances with a scoreless but shaky ninth.

The Braves have won six of seven and 11 of 15, but they are four games behind Washington in the National League East with four games to play. Washington beat St. Louis 6-4 in 10 innings on Saturday night.

One more Washington victory or Atlanta loss will eliminate the Braves from the division race and they will host a wild-card playoff game next Friday.

"Tonight was a good team win because we had a lot of guys come out of the bullpen, Martin had a couple big hits, we played some defense," Minor said. "We got the win tonight and also I'm not even anymore. I've got a winning record."

In the ninth, leadoff batter Ruben Tejada reached against Kimbrel on second baseman Dan Uggla's fielding error and advanced to second on a wild pitch before pinch-hitter Daniel Murphy flew out.

Kimbrel, one of the majors' hardest throwers, hit David Wright in the groin area. The ball ricocheted off Wright and hit home-plate umpire Paul Nauert in the mask. Trainers had to tend to both Wright and Nauert, who both stayed in the game.

Kimbrel settled down to strike out pinch-hitter Ike Davis and Lucas Duda to end it.

Wright, who confirmed that an 88 mph slider hit him in a sensitive spot, was glad Kimbrel didn't throw his fastball, which hit 100 mph two pitches earlier.

"I'm lucky that he hit me with a slider," Wright said. "A fastball would've been a different story, obviously. Now I know what those catchers have to go through on a regular basis. I've got a little more respect for them now."

Minor (11-10) allowed three hits, no walks and struck out four, leaving after Wright's double in the seventh.

Chad Durbin got the second out of the inning on Scott Hairston's flyout. Luis Avilan balked on his first pitch to Duda, advancing Wright to third, before Duda struck out.

Prado leads the NL and ranks second in the majors with 60 multi-hit games.

Atlanta went ahead 1-0 in the first when Prado hit a one-out double, advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on Jason Heyward's RBI groundout.

In the third, Andrelton Simmons lined a leadoff single to left, moved to second on Minor's sacrifice bunt, and scored on Prado's two-out RBI double off the wall in left-center.

Minor, who allowed just two singles through six innings, improved to 4-0 with a 0.87 ERA over his last four starts, a span of 31 innings. The left-hander is 5-0 in his last seven starts.

In six career starts against the Mets, Minor is 3-1 and with a 6.03 ERA over 31 1-3 innings.

"I think the turning point of his season was the game against the Yankees at home," Braves catcher Brian McCann said. "He came out and attacked them and trusted his stuff. I think once he got through the Yankees and showed himself he can do that, he can get through anything."

Chris Young (4-9) gave up seven hits, two runs and one walk with six strikeouts in six innings. The Mets have scored just four runs in his last four starts.

"In his last two starts, his velocity climbed," New York manager Terry Collins said. "It was up 3 to 4 mph, which I was very impressed with. He gets himself ready to pitch as well as anyone I've been around. Makes mistakes once and while but for the most part, he executes his pitches."

Jonny Venters allowed two singles in a scoreless eighth for Atlanta.

Elvin Ramirez pitched a scoreless seventh and Ramon Ramirez did the same in the eighth for New York, which has 85 losses, the same number as last season.

Kimbrel lowered his ERA to 1.02 and has 113 strikeouts in 61 1-3 innings.

"That quality of arm, you won't see many like that, and that arm angle he throws from is very, very deceptive," Collins said. "It's very hard to pick up. He throws both of his pitches for strikes. And when it's (letters high), there's not many guys that can get on top of that pitch. There's no doubt he's one of the best in the league."

Notes: Jones has gone hitless with three walks in his last 13 at-bats. ... Manager Fredi Gonzalez said the Braves will have three starting pitchers (RHP Kris Medlen, Tim Hudson and either LHPs Minor or Paul Maholm) with seven relievers and three catchers on the 25-man roster if they host a wild-card game. ... Gonzalez said Venters pitched the eighth because LHP Eric O'Flaherty has a stiff back and wasn't available. ...SS Simmons ran into center field to make a diving catch to rob Wright of a single in the fourth. ... Braves CF Michael Bourn missed his sixth straight game with a sprained left thumb. ... Atlanta will try to win Medlen's 23rd straight start on Sunday. Medlen (9-1) will pitch opposite RHP Jenrry Mejia (1-1). ... Mets manager Terry Collins said before the game that Wright will get Sunday off. ... Prado's double was his 41st, fifth-most in the NL. ... Avilan has allowed just four earned runs over his last 25 appearances.

Journal of young Sir Arthur Conan Doyle published

The surgeon aboard the whaling vessel Hope was often covered in the blood of seals and other animals, his clothes frozen enough that he'd have to stand next to the ship's stove to thaw before undressing.

A first-time sailor, he wasn't supposed to take part in the clubbing of seals, but he did, and repeatedly fell into the frigid waters, nearly freezing to death.

A journal by the young man, written at age 20 in 1880, was published yesterday. ?The ?author? ?Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.

Best known for creating the ingenious detective Sherlock Holmes, Doyle was first a surgeon, and went along on the whaling ship after a friend of his backed out, according to a review of the book by the Daily Mail.

The journey was intense and bloody, and the sailors' job was to take as many seals and whales as possible. As noted by the Smithsonian, though, Doyle's journal of the trip isn't all blood and gore, and contains Doyle's neat prose and lovely illustrations of the ship and the terrain it explored in the Arctic Ocean. ?

The killing of whales was common at the time, although Doyle did write about his feelings of sympathy for the hunted animals. He also describes the beauty of the icy landscape and awe he felt upon seeing enormous humpback whales, which the sailors didn't hunt because they contained too little oil to make their capture worthwhile. Whale oil was valuable for its use in lamps, candle wax and other applications.

Doyle wrote about his experience in both fiction and nonfiction, which helped him first catch the eye of publishers. Although he completed medical school and briefly practiced as a surgeon, he soon realized his true talent lay in writing.

The account of his Arctic voyage is called "Dangerous Work: Diary of an Arctic Adventure" (British Library Publishing, 2012) and is available from the British Library Shop.

In Pictures: Thousands attend Ulster Covenant parade

A contentious Unionist parade passed a Catholic church in Belfast went off without incident, but residents have accused the marchers of breaking rules.

More than 2,000 Orangemen from north Belfast lodges were surrounded by a heavy police presence as they marched towards City Hall to take part in a massive loyal order parade to mark the centenary of the signing of the pro-Union Ulster Covenant.

An estimated 30,000 marchers are taking part in the Orange Order march - from the City Hall to the grounds of the Northern Ireland Assembly at Stormont in east Belfast.

Unionists agreed with the Parades Commission to play only hymns along Donegall Street - from the Carrick Hill junction to Royal Avenue - as they passed St Patrick's Church near the city centre.

Locals had requested that no music be played outside the church.

The place of worship has been the scene of disorder at points during the summer after a band was accused of playing sectarian music outside it on July 12.

Protesters and residents claimed the bands breached the rules set by the Parades Commission by playing the most famous Unionist anthem - The Sash - before reaching the end of the stretch.

Carrick Hill Residents Association chairman Frank Dempsey said they had flouted the rules.

"That determination has been smashed," said Mr Dempsey.

"Some of the bands, yes, they did stick by it, there's no problem there. But a number of them bands broke that."

The local man insisted he was not nitpicking over the rules set by the commission.

"You saw the way they danced there with the drum and that's supposed to be a hymn," he said.

But, Father Michael Sheehan, administrator of St Patrick's, said while some of the bands beat their drums exuberantly, he believed they showed respect during the 20-minute march outside the church.

He insisted the talks with the Parades Commission had been fruitful, saying continued dialogue was needed to avoid future trouble.

"They marched with dignity down the road," added Fr Sheehan.

"I think a degree of respect was shown that hasn't been shown before."

Lodges including the Pride of Ardoyne and Pride of the Shore played Abide With Me and Onward Christian Soldiers, as spectators looked on.

Police were on high alert, with up to 50 Land Rovers stationed along the flashpoint at St Patrick's.

The massive parade will finish at Stormont with a cultural festival held to commemorate the 1912 proclamation against plans for Home Rule in Ireland.

Other contentious sections of the participants' journeys to and from the main meeting point at Stormont will also be monitored by police.

The commission has also placed the sacred music restriction on those bands that will pass St Matthew's Catholic Church in Newtownards Road close to Stormont.

Politicians from across the political divide have appealed for calm at the event which is set to be one of the biggest loyal order parades seen in Belfast.

Thieves steal $10,000 in wedding presents when couple leaves gifts outside overnight

Amy and Jason Wright on the day of their wedding. (Morning Call)A newlywed couple's marriage is off to a rough start after thieves took more than $10,000 worth of gifts that the couple left unprotected outdoors overnight.

"Somebody had come and taken all of the wedding gifts," Amy Wright, the bride, told local Pennsylvania affiliate WFMZ. "Every last card was gone, the boxes, the gift bags."

To be clear, the wedding gifts weren't just sitting out on the sidewalk. But they were left unattended inside the outdoor tent where the wedding reception was held. Amy, 30, and her husband Jason Wright, 31, spent the morning after their Saturday night celebration filling out a police report.

"We noticed there were no gifts on the table [in one tent], and we said, well, somebody must have moved them into the house," Amy told the Morning Call. "We checked with our friends, and no one seemed to know what happened to the gifts.

"We had to call every family member and friend and ask them what did you give, it was embarrassing," Amy told the station.

The gifts were stolen just a stone's throw from where Amy and Jason were sleeping, 20 yards away in a nearby house.

And adding insult to injury, the couple found torn-up wedding cards floating in a pond on the property.

"When I discovered that in the pond I was just in tears, I broke down," Amy told the station.

We've reported on some crazy wedding stories this year alone, such as the bride who was doused in a "black oily ooze" just moments before the ceremony, and the $5,000 ceremony thrown for a pair of California dogs.

But the Wrights shouldn't necessarily given up hope just yet. They are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to whoever stole their wedding presents. And stranger things have happened with positive outcomes, including the feat of the New York City garbage man, who in August, sifted through tons of trash to find a woman's missing wedding ring.

Samsung Galaxy Music leaks ahead of early October debut ...

Android Central

The name was revealed on Samsung's official list of Jelly Bean-upgradable devices, and today brings more news of the curious little smartphone known as the Samsung Galaxy Music. Fresh details have emerged today via Austrian site Telecom-Presse, revealing a phone with humble specs and a distinctive front face.?

The device, which seems to be an entry-level smartphone focused on -- you guessed it -- music. Featuring two stereo speakers, a tiny 3-inch QVGA (240x320) display and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. It's powered by an 850MHz single-core CPU, so you won't have a whole lot of horsepower to play around with, and as such we'd expect this thing to be priced competitively. Interestingly, there'll also be a dual-SIM?version of the phone, branded as Galaxy Music Duos. This suggests Samsung may look to target the developing world with this device.

The Galaxy Music will reportedly make its debut at an event in Frankfurt on Oct 11 -- invites for this gathering recently started trickling out to the German press. We've got one more image after the break. Full specs can be found at the source link.

Fast-Food Logos Burned Into Pleasure Center of Children's Brains

long before children develop self-control

This is true, self control is something that develops slowly and isn't present in young children. This is why parents need to provide a substitute for that self control. When I was young my family ate every meal at home, from healthy home cooked food. We NEVER ate at fast food joints, and weren't exposed to fast food advertising. Surprise, now in late middle age (50) I am thinner and in better physical condition than 95% of the country. I've run up flights of steps and seen 20 year olds who can't keep up without wheezing and having to stop for breath.

A whole generation of parents seems to have dropped the ball. I see children who eat every meal at McDonalds, and are obese by age 6. I see children who badly need exercise driven around by their parents for distances easily walkable. The parents are enabling this problem through lack of parental responsibility for their own children. This is not rocket science: if you eat twice as many calories per day as you burn, you're going to get fat. How did we get so stupid as a nation that we no longer understand this? It seems like whacking one's self on the thumb with a hammer, and wondering why it hurts... over and over and over, never learning that it's our own swinging of the hammer that hurts. Not all the advertising in the world can MAKE you go to McDonalds. You have to chose to do so. You are free to choose NOT to do so, and this is the choice I've made all my life.

It's just... bewildering to see people make the opposite choice, eat several big macs per day coupled with massive high calorie sodas and large fries, and then bitch about getting fat. Stop doing that! If you're a parent, instil a sense of basic reality in your children, and don't feed them a diet of fast food when they're young enough to be dependent on you. It makes me sick to see so many parents hauling their 5 kids to fast food joints for every single meal.

Why Apple Doesn't Have Google Maps - Business Insider

Apple's iPhone 5 launch has been overshadowed by the company's new mapping application.

Previously, Apple used Google's data for its maps app. Now it's using a blended mix of two dozen data partners, with TomTom the primary map data provider.

The new maps are different, which will always cause some angst for users. There are also reports that the maps are inaccurate, sending people the wrong direction, or to wrong locations. Also, Apple didn't include public transit data, thus making the maps inherently inferior to Google's maps app.

We've been testing the app for a week now, and while it has drawbacks compared to the Google-based maps, it also has its advantages. The maps are better-looking, smoother, and include turn-by-turn directions.

Still, at best Apple maps are a lateral move, not a step up. Apple, being Apple, didn't tell people it was going to replace Google maps with a first-generation product that needs some work. On its iOS 6 page, Apple calls maps "the most beautiful, powerful mapping service ever," adding, "you won?t get lost."

Despite Apple's claims, the maps are not the "most powerful," and do get some people lost. As a result, many people are mad at Apple.

So why would Apple take such a big risk with one of the core applications of one of its most important products?? The easy answer would be to say that Apple is an arrogant control freak that wants to force its own maps on helpless users, but in reality it is a complicated mix of different factors.

While Google likes to call itself an open company, the truth is that it's as ruthlessly controlling as any major corporation. It wouldn't let Apple do certain things with Google-based maps, according to Dr. Ed Lu, a former Google employee who worked on maps. Lu wouldn't say exactly what Google restricted, but he hinted that Apple couldn't get turn-by-turn directions for its maps.

John Gruber of Daring Fireball said on his podcast that Google's maps on the iPhone were made with bitmaps, which load slower. Apple's new maps are vector based, which is why they're smoother and load faster. Gruber says Google wouldn't let Apple do vector-based maps with Google's data.

Screenshot

Turn by turn on the iPhone is gorgeous and works well in our limited testing.

So, as good as Apple's maps with Google data were, they were being limited by restrictions Google imposed on Apple.

Apple was in negotiations with Google to overcome some of these restrictions, but the negotiations broke down. We've heard from two sources that Apple executives have been frustrated with Google over the way it controls the maps data.

With negotiations broken down, Apple had to build a new maps app.

Apple would have eventually built its own maps application, anyway. Maps are one of the most important apps on the phone. Apple couldn't let a third party like Google play such an influential role over a key feature of the phone.

Each year the gap between the iPhone and Android phones gets narrowed. If Apple can make a mapping application that is significantly better than Google, it's a key differentiator for consumers.

Unfortunately for Apple, its first pass at maps is not significantly better. But, contrary to much of the bluster out there, it's not significantly worse.

Apple maps are the first iteration of an extremely complicated product. With time, Apple will gather more data, and refine the product. That doesn't do much to sate people who expect the absolute best from Apple. And thus, the maps app is the dominant story, not the fact that Apple released its best ever phone.

Positive Review of '2016: Obama's America' from an Obama Voter

I reviewed the excellent?Dinesh D?Souza movie??2012: Obama?s America?the other day on this blog. Raking in about $26 million so far, the film is the second-highest-grossing political documentary of all time, and the sixth-highest-grossing documentary period.?Word is the film will be out on DVD and pay-per-view before the election.

I came across a review of the movie from an unusual source: a man who voted for Obama in 2008 and had his eyes opened after viewing the documentary. Read his whole review here. I?ll share a few excerpts:

I had the displeasure of seeing 2016 the movie yesterday. But not in the way you may think. You would think that as a former Obama fan, it would have been a right-wing propaganda filled experience. A waste of my time. It wasn?t! ?

I was quite honestly amazed at the many things I learned ? right from the horse?s mouth, so to speak? from his brother, and others who knew him ? The movie was very well done and very factual. It was scarier than any Friday the 13th movie I have ever seen. ?

There was not a sound in the theater as the movie progressed and when it ended, people just sat there, stunned. There was not a nay-sayer or heckler in the entire group. I might have been one if them had I not been so shaken.

It really is a revealing look of who Obama is and where he and his handlers want to take our beloved country, now that the waters have been tested as to what he can get away with, what it reveals his plans for the next 4 years and beyond is, well, reprehensible. I voted for this man, I had his best wishes in my heart, but he has not returned the favor to the American people. In fact, he seems completely unaware of owing Americans anything, blacks, whites, Hispanics ? they are merely a means to an end: a vote to further his agenda would end our America, the way we have known it.

No matter your political leanings, if you love America, you owe it to yourself to see the movie.

Read the whole thing.

Researchers call for specialty metals recycling

ScienceDaily (Sep. 24, 2012) ? An international policy is needed for recycling scarce specialty metals that are critical in the production of consumer goods, according to Yale researchers in Science.

"A recycling rate of zero for specialty metals is alarming when we consider that their use is growing quickly," said co-author Barbara Reck, a research scientist at the Yale School of Forestry & Environmental Studies.

Specialty metals, which include rare earth elements such as indium, gallium and germanium, account for more than 30 of the 60 metals in the periodic table. Because they are used in small amounts for very precise technological purposes, such as red phosphors, high-strength magnets, thin-film solar cells and computer chips, recovery can be so technologically and economically challenging that the attempt is seldom made.

"Specialty metals are used in products in only small amounts, but their value typically does not provide enough incentive to invest in a complicated recovery process. Also, the technology to do so is untested," said Thomas Graedel, the study's other co-author and Clifton R. Musser Professor of Industrial Ecology.

The researchers said improved design for recycling, deposits on consumer goods, recycling targets for specialty metals and financial incentives for industry to apply state-of-the-art separation techniques and recycling technologies would improve metal recycling.

"Metals are infinitely recyclable in principle, but, in practice, recycling is often inefficient or essentially nonexistent because of limits imposed by social behavior, product design, recycling technologies and the thermodynamics of separation," said Reck.

The researchers said that modern technology has produced a conundrum. The more intricate the product and the more diverse the materials it uses, the better it's likely to perform but the more difficult it is to recycle.

The benefit to recycling metals, they said, includes the potential to reduce the extraction of virgin ores, thus extending the life of those resources. The environmental impacts of metal production are reduced substantially when recycled materials, rather than primary materials, are used, and recycling a metal is generally much more energy-efficient than acquiring it from a mine.

"Depending on the metal and the form of scrap, recycling can save as much as a factor of 10 or 20 in energy consumption," Graedel said. "The situation clearly calls for international policy initiatives to minimize the seemingly bizarre situation of spending large amounts of technology, time, energy and money to acquire scarce metals from the mines and then throwing them away after a single use."

NASA: Let's Build a Space Station on the Far Side of the Moon

Everyone needs something audacious on their wish list. NASA's is a space station not 200 miles about the Earth, as the International Space Station is, but an installation 277,000 miles away, on the far side of the moon.

Over the weekend, the Orlando Sentinel reported that NASA administrator Charles Bolden had briefed the Obama administration on a plan to build such an outpost that would travel to the Earth-moon Lagrange Point 2, or L2. The Lagrange Points are spots in our planet's neighborhood where the gravities of the Earth and the moon cancel each other out. L2 is an ideal spot for a station, since you wouldn't need much energy to hold the thing in place.

Sending astronauts so far from Earth could be a major stepping stone toward sending them further distances, like to Mars. For one thing, building this mission would mean NASA would have to learn how to keep astronauts safe in deep space. An L2 outpost would lie beyond the Earth's protective magnetosphere, putting astronauts in much more danger from radiation and thus required new shielding. And if NASA needed to execute a rescue mission, 277,000 miles is a bit more challenging than 200.

According to the Sentinel, it's unclear whether the president would support such a mission. And like all things NASA, the cost is an enormous issue. There's no clear price tag on an L2 space station, but at the very least it would require NASA to actually build the Space Launch System that would blast its Orion capsule (now called the Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle) into orbit. The agency is congressionally mandated to do so, but it's unclear whether the project will ever truly be funded.

Some Surefire Tips For Home Improvement Success | The Only ...

People have always been interested in home improvement. Some people are looking to upgrade their home, some need more space, and others just want to spruce up the appearance. When you?re a homeowner, you?ll likely find that your house can always use a little home improvement work. Read this article for information about making changes to your home.

If your home has low ceilings, use window treatments to add the illusion of higher ceilings. To make the ceilings seem higher, simply position the curtain rod, drapes and valances, higher up on the wall above windows.

Get an electrician to install outlets inside cabinets located near your appliances. You can now hide the cord to your microwave. This relatively simple step makes a big difference in the way your kitchen looks.

When you are redoing a room, make sure you consider the 60/30/10 rule. You should use your dominant color in 60% of your room, your secondary color in 30% of your room and the remaining 10% of your color choice as the accent color. In most rooms, you?ll find that this means employing the dominant color on the painting of the walls, the secondary shade in the upholstery of the furniture, and the accent color on accessories.

As you consider home improvement projects, think how long any appliances you may buy will actually last. New refrigerators last about 20 years, but dryers and washers only last a bit more than half of that time. When you are doing improvements, invest in good appliances.

People put a lot of time and money into installing showy features like radiant floor heating. That said, they don?t invest in the needed repairs like exterior paint. Potential buyers are more likely to notice these obvious flaws and believe the home to be a fixer-upper. The first impression your buyers get is very important.

Work with construction adhesive and remove the squeaks from your floors. You may need to do it from your basement or even the crawlspace, but this is one improvement that is worth the effort. You will basically be gluing each floor joist to its neighbor by applying a glue line along each one with a caulking gun.

Chandeliers might also be a nice touch. A sparkling chandelier is ideal for adding visual impact to your living area or formal dining area; many designs are available for only a few hundred dollars. For more brightness, get a lighting fixture with wattage between 200-400.

Maintaining a home improvement budgets goes a long way toward maintaining or increasing the value of your home, so aim for setting money aside as a budget for handing any repairs or upgrades. Anyone who owns a home and is able to commit a certain amount annually toward home maintenance ensures his or her home stays in tip-top condition. If there is money left in this budget at the end of the year, it can be saved for bigger home improvement projects in the future.

If your contractor want you to pay cash in return for a discount, it is often a warning sign that something illegal is going on. Paying with cash won?t give you the records you?ll need to produce should anything go wrong.

Notify your neighbors if you plan to be making home improvements that require street use. Blocking some or the entire road is usually needed when doing major renovations, for shifting equipment and making deliveries. Giving your neighbors plenty of warning will be appreciated.

Inspiration is all around you! Check out home improvement and decorating blogs, home and garden shows and popular magazines for ideas. Don?t worry, if you aren?t planning any projects, just now. Defining your style and planning for future projects is a great way to avoid problems when you do start your project. As well, if you know what you want to do well in advance, you can start buying materials a bit at a time.

As stated previously, home improvement projects have been popular to a lot of people because the could both increase their house?s value and also improve the way it looks. In even the newest home, there is always an opportunity for improvement. If you follow the advice from the above article, you can make home improvements that fit your skills and needs.

Yoga's here to stay! - Holistic Health - Medicine Blog - timesunion ...

?Yoga is the practice of tolerating the consequences of being yourself? - Bhagavad Gita

Even though the month is quickly coming to a close it?s worth noting that September is? National Yoga Month.? Ironically, even though about 16 million people do yoga now, this fact keeps a low profile, preferring to be quietly noticed, rather than creating a lot of ballyhoo about itself.? How very like yoga to do that.

Now if you?ve been following this blog for more than a week, you probably realize that yoga has been part of the warp and weft of my life for about 20 years.? I discovered the practice while struggling to regain my health after a very serious illness.? More than just the personal benefits I gained from the practice, it took hold of me so completely that I began a whole second career sharing yoga with students as a teacher in the Kripalu tradition.

Yoga is and has been my anchor when life was most uncertain; the burr under my saddle when my actions didn?t match my belief; the physical metaphor for developing the strength, flexibility and balance I hoped to embrace every day.? And, just like the opening quote implies, yoga offered an opportunity for self-acceptance I?d not found anywhere or anytime before.

Everyone, including me, comes to yoga hoping to gain something from the experience.? Maybe they want to be healthier, less stressed, more flexible, or simply cure their aching backs. ? There are as many reasons as there are people taking class.

Probably for me, the most exciting part of what I do is teaching folks who are ?newbies? to the whole yoga thing.? Sometimes they share with me what brought them to sign up, sometimes I just look out over the room and sense the feeling that they are waiting for something to happen, some sought after change to come.

It?s not my business? to know why they are in that room sitting cross-legged on the floor for perhaps the first time since they were 5 or 6 years old.? What IS my business is to reassure them without hesitation that, if practiced regularly, the yoga will guide them unerringly from where they are now, to where they need to go next.? Ironically, it?s not even essential that the practitioner know where that is ? the yoga seems to always know.

So there you have it ? my open ?love letter? to yoga, my companion over these many years.

True, yoga is not for everyone, and there are certainly other ways to bring together the body, mind and spirit in the union which defines yoga.? But, if you feel the least bit curious, I offer my invitation to be brave and try it.? There?s lots of different styles, and many personalities of teachers to chose from.? Do a little research and find something that calls to you.

I?ve always thought of the Fall, not January, as the beginning of the year.? It?s a great time to begin a new practice, or recommit to an existing one.

Meet you on the mat!

China surveillance ships enter waters near disputed islands

TOKYO (Reuters) - Two Chinese marine surveillance ships entered what Japan considers its territorial waters near disputed islands in the East China Sea on Monday, prompting an official protest from Tokyo amid rising tension between Asia's two biggest economies.

China's Xinhua news agency confirmed that two civilian surveillance ships were undertaking a "rights defense" patrol near the islands, citing the State Oceanic Administration, which controls the ships.

Japan's Foreign Ministry said it had lodged an official protest with the Chinese envoy to Japan against the move.

Sino-Japanese relations deteriorated sharply after Japan bought the islands, called Senkaku in Japan and Diaoyu in China, sparking anti-Japan protests in cities across China.

"In recent days, Japan has constantly provoked incidents concerning the Diaoyu islands issue, gravely violating China's territorial sovereignty," China's Xinhua news agency said.

The ship patrols were intended to exercise China's "administrative jurisdiction" over the islands, it said.

"Following the relevant laws of the People's Republic of China, (the ships) again carried out a regular rights defense patrol in our territorial waters around the Diaoyu islands."

The Japanese Coast Guard ordered the Chinese ships to move out of the area, but received no response, an official said.

Besides the two marine surveillance ships, there were nine Chinese fishery patrol ships near the islands as of 7:00 a.m. (6 p.m. EDT on Sunday), but they were outside what Japan calls its territorial waters, the Coast Guard said.

Sino-Japanese ties have long been plagued by China's memories of Japan's military aggression in the 1930s and 1940s and present rivalry over regional influence and resources.

The islets are located near rich fishing grounds and potentially huge gas reserves.

The latest flare-up in tensions comes when both countries focus on domestic political pressures. Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda's government faces an election in months, adding pressure on him not to look weak on China.

China's Communist Party is preoccupied with a leadership turnover, with President Hu Jintao due to step down as party leader at a congress that could open as soon as next month.

Despite the long-running territorial disputes, their economic ties have grown closer over the years. China is Japan's largest trading partner. In 2011, their bilateral trade grew 14.3 percent in value to a record $345 billion.

Hunters Active But Canada Geese Thrive in Minn.

State wildlife officials say the population of Canada geese appears to be increasing, even though Minnesota hunters killed more of the birds than any other waterfowl last year.
?? ?
The state Department of Natural Resources estimates there were 434,000 Canada geese in the state this spring. A St. Paul Pioneer Press report says the DNR's goal is to have a population of 250,000 Canada geese.
?? ?
Hunters have been out in force, but the Canada geese population continues to thrive. Federal figures say Minnesota hunters killed nearly 239,000 Canada geese last year. The DNR also issued a record 200 permits for farmers to kill geese out of season, up from 160 last year, resulting in as many as 1,500 geese being shot.
?? ?
Wildlife managers are considering changes to hunting policies that might help bring the population down further.

From Nigeria to Athens, Muslim protests rumble on

DUBAI (Reuters) - Muslims protested in Nigeria, Iran, Greece and Turkey on Sunday to show anti-Western anger against a film and cartoons insulting Islam had not dissipated.

As delegates from around the world gathered in New York for a U.N. General Assembly where the clash between free speech and blasphemy is bound to be raised, U.S. flags were once again burning in parts of the Muslim world.

Iranian students chanted "Death to America" and "Death to Israel" outside the French embassy in Tehran in protest at the decision by satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo to publish cartoons of the Prophet Mohammad, days after widespread protests - some deadly - against a film made in the United States.

Shi'ite Muslims in the Nigerian town of Katsina burned U.S., French and Israeli flags and a religious leader called for protests to continue until the makers of the film and cartoons are punished.

In Pakistan, where fifteen people were killed in protests on Friday, a government minister has offered $100,000 to anyone who kills the maker of the short, amateurish video "The Innocence of Muslims". Calls have increased for a U.N. measure outlawing insults to Islam and blasphemy in general.

In Athens, some protesters hurled bottles of water, stones and shoes at police who responded with teargas. Calm returned when demonstrators interrupted the protest to pray.

Hours later, dozens of Muslim inmates in Athens' main prison set mattresses and bed sheets on fire in protest. Firemen with four engines battled the flames in some cells but police and government officials said late at night the situation was under control.

ON ALERT

Protests around the world were relatively small and calm, but Western embassies remained on alert after the U.S. ambassador to Libya and three other Americans were killed in one of the first protests, on September 11.

The upsurge of Muslim anger - just weeks before U.S. elections - have confronted President Barack Obama with a setback yet in his efforts to keep the "Arab Spring" revolutions from fuelling a new wave of anti-Americanism.

In U.S. ally Turkey, a secular Muslim state often seen as a bridge between the Islamic world and the West, protesters set fire to U.S. and Israeli flags on Sunday.

"May the hands that touch Mohammad break," chanted some 200 protesters before peacefully dispersing.

"We will certainly not allow uncontrolled protests, but we will not just grin and bear it when Islam's prophet is insulted," Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan told party members at the weekend.

"The protests in the Muslim world must be measured, and the West should show a determined stance against Islamophobia."
