When planning a home solar system, calculate the potential energy generation of the system using hours of sunshine in the winter. Adjust the thermostat according to the season. During cold winter months, drop the thermostat a degree or two, and for the hotter summer days, raise it a bit. If you do this, and remove or add layers of clothing as necessary, you will use less energy and keep a good temperature in the house.

Keep track of your watt usage. If you do not know the formula to figure out the energy each appliance uses, there are tools like a Kill-A-Watt that can give you the information instantly. Plug these gadgets into an appliance to find out how much energy is used in an hour, a month or a year. You can then use this information to find out how much the appliance really costs to run.

When battery chargers and other electronics are not in use, unplug them. They may not be currently in use, but items such as cell phone chargers, laptops and mp3 players draw energy when left plugged in.
