Law students to help Wills Clinic at Pembroke Legal Aid of North ...

Wake Forest law students will be returning to the Pembroke office of Legal Aid of North Carolina (LANC) for a fourth time this spring to serve area clients at two free Wills Clinics.

The clinics are scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 16, and Saturday, March 2.

Although LANC receives a grant to prepare advance directives for local residents, demand in the past few years has exceeded Pembroke office resources, according to Wake Forest Law Outreach Director Beth Hopkins. ?As a result, Wake Forest law students?have been?invited to work at the Wills Clinic?to receive hands-on?experience and?earn?pro bono hours,? she said.

Under the supervision of LANC Staff Attorney David Richardson, the law students will meet with clients and aid in drafting simple wills and advance directive documents for low-income clients?living in?Robeson County.

The Wills Clinic has been held?for the past three years,?and Aurora Stierwald, the Estate Planning Project Coordinator for the Pro Bono Project, who attended the Pembroke Wills Clinic as a?first-year law student, wanted to ensure ?it would run again.

?I think it?s a very rewarding experience for everyone involved,? Stierwald said. ?The students are able to utilize what they have learned in law school and also gain the practical experience that?s so important to a legal career. Legal Aid also really appreciates Wake Forest Law students driving?two-and-a-half?hours to Pembroke to help with these legal documents because they have more clients than they do resources.?

ShelterBox Expands Reach in Syrian Refugee Crisis, Response Teams En Route to Jordan

International disaster relief organization, ShelterBox, is en route to Jordan after the government released an urgent appeal for aid as an ?unprecedented? amount of Syrian refugees continue to enter the country.

Sarasota, FL (PRWEB) January 25, 2013

International disaster relief organization, ShelterBox, is en route to Jordan after the government released an urgent appeal for aid as an ?unprecedented? amount of Syrian refugees continue to enter the country.

ShelterBox responds following disasters such as earthquake, flood, tsunami, hurricane, cyclone or conflict by delivering boxes of aid. Each box contains a disaster relief tent, stove, water filtration system, blankets and other items necessary to help families live independently and with dignity in the months following disaster.

Foreign Minister Nasser Judeh released a statement Thursday, requesting international aid after 20,000 Syrians crossed into the country in a single week. Judeh described the influx as ?unprecedented, larger than any other time in the last two years.?

In response to the country?s appeal, members of the highly trained ShelterBox Response Team (SRT) are en route to Jordan to assess the need for emergency shelter and other aid.

Although ShelterBox had prepositioned its aid with the Jordanian Red Crescent in December 2012, the need for additional emergency shelter and supplies is imminent.

ShelterBox first responded to the Syrian refugee crisis in October 2012, by delivering 500 boxes of winterized aid to the Domiz refugee camp in the Kurdistan region of Iraq. By December 2012, ShelterBox aid was also distributed in Syria, to a total of 710 families living families living in the Al-Salameh camp near the Turkey border.

An additional SRT is currently in Lebanon, awaiting the arrival of ShelterBoxes and assessing the need for more, in response to the Lebanese government?s request for aid earlier this month.

ShelterBox is also responding to the typhoon in the Philippines, bushfires in Australia and flooding in Nigeria.

Chicago battles worst blaze 'in many years'

Charles Rex Arbogast / AP

Chicago firefighters battle a five-alarm blaze in single-digit temperatures at a warehouse on the city's south side early Wednesday.

By John Newland, Staff Writer, NBC News

A five-alarm fire ripped through a warehouse in Chicago?s south side Tuesday night.

?This is a major fire,? the Chicago Fire Department posted on Twitter, adding that the scale of the response ? five alarms plus two ?special? calls for additional trucks -- was ?extremely rare.? About 170 firefighters were on the scene.

?This fire has about one-third of the city fire apparatus at this location,? the department said on Twitter.

"We haven?t had a fire this big in many years," fire department spokesman Larry Langford told?NBC Chicago.

Photos posted on Twitter showed flames towering above the abandoned warehouse. The fire briefly jumped to an adjacent building, causing concern. That neighboring building is a printing company, its owner told NBC Chicago. He expressed concern about chemicals inside that could explode.

More news from NBCChicago.com

Firefighters were also concerned about the nearby location of a fuel pumping station to the east of the warehouse.

The fire department's messages on Twitter highlighted the intensity of the blaze: ?Rear is collapsed. ? North end of building starting to fall. ? (The fire department) will be here for hours.?

The department declared the fire under control early Wednesday. One firefighter was taken to a hospital with a ?minor back issue,? the fire department said.

US Navy ship taking on water on Philippine reef

MANILA, Philippines (AP) ? A U.S. Navy minesweeper that ran aground on a Philippine reef is damaged and taking on water and will have to be lifted off the rocks in an operation that could last another week or two, a Navy official said Thursday.

Before the USS Guardian can be removed from the Tubbataha Reef, about 56,000 liters (15,000 gallons) of fuel will be siphoned off to avoid spills, Rear Adm. Thomas Carney, commander of the Navy's Logistics Group in the Western Pacific, told reporters.

The ship, which is based in Japan, crashed into the reef before dawn Jan. 17 while on its way to Indonesia after making a rest and refueling stop in Subic Bay, a former American naval base west of Manila.

All of its 79 officers and crew were transferred to two other U.S. vessels the following day for safety reasons as the 68-meter (74-yard) long, 1,300-ton ship was unable to maneuver on its own and buffeted by strong winds and waves.

Carney said the ship is hard aground about 30 meters (yards) from the edge of the reef, a marine sanctuary that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

"It's got hull penetration in several places, and there is a significant amount of water inside the ship right now," he said.

Philippine coast guard chief Rear Adm. Rodolfo Isorena said efforts to remove the fuel have been hampered by the rough waters and another attempt will be made Thursday.

Carney said heavy items aboard the ship will be taken off to lighten it before the vessel is loaded on another ship or barge.

He said the operation could last a week or two.

"I want to express my deepest regret for the circumstances that we are all in right now," Carney said.

He said an investigation will look into all the factors that may have led to the grounding, including a reported faulty digital chart, sea conditions, weather and the state of the ship's navigational equipment.

The Philippine government said it wants to fine the Navy for the damage and illegal entry into the marine sanctuary.

Angelique Songco, head of the Protected Areas Management Board, which is in charge of the reef, said the government imposes a fine of about $300 per square meter (yard) of damaged coral plus about the same amount for rehabilitation and other violations.

Carney said that after the ship is removed, the damage to the reef would be assessed and the two governments, which have close military and political ties, will discuss any claims.

A Brief History of Stunt Scootering | Xtremesport

Although frequently mocked, the freestyle scootering market is seriously holding its own in skateparks across the globe.

Skateboarders and BMXers who were quick to label scootering as fad have been pretty much forced to eat their words. Scooter kids who were new to the scene in 2001 have grown into ferocious adults, competing in established competitions, gaining lucrative sponsorships and ultimately turning the hobby into a recognised extreme sport and profession.

But where did it all begin?

Scooters themselves are not a new invention. Wooden antiques have been found that easily date back 100 years, but turning the humble scooter from a toy into a sport was a far more recent affair.

In 1996, Micro introduced folding scooters to the market. They turned into an international craze, providing a popular commuter tool in crowded cities such as Tokyo, as well as toys for kids. Their lightweight frames made them perfect for jumps, so it wasn?t long before extreme skaters started to use them for tricks. To fill the need for stronger scooters to withstand bigger stunts, the ?pro? scooter market was born, with a host of brands such as Madd Gear, Razor and Grit competing to provide the best models for the budding sport.

Stunt scooters have been engineered over time to take a beating at the skatepark and still live to tell the tale. Crucial changes to the design mark the difference between a toy and a piece of extreme sports equipment, so here are the basics?

Scooter decks are your ride?s backbone, so it?s really important that they?re strong enough to provide decent support. Stunt scooter decks will come as a one or two-piece part (two-piece decks have the deck and head tube bolted together at the bottom, as opposed to being a single piece which is welded together, or a single mould). Less separate parts also mean less weak spots where breakages can occur, so you see the logic. Single and two-piece decks are strong, but like any piece of equipment, can break if you don?t take care of it, so don?t expect miracles from any piece of hardware!

Scooter handlebars do not fold on stunt models. Again, the bend provided a weak spot that wasn?t desirable, so it made sense to make handlebars fixed and one piece for strength. The majority of bars of this type are made of 4130 Chromoly or 6061 aluminium, and are pretty strong and lightweight, depending on the brand. Usually, a handlebar designed for extreme use will be welded and possibly gusseted to make it robust without being unnecessarily heavy.

High-end forks tend to now be threadless. This allows the scooter to have a compression system, which will hold the scooter bars to the fork and wheel with greater power and stability. Threaded forks, as seen on cheaper models, tend to wobble more and not be as strong.

Traditionally, wheels for scooter would have plastic cores with a urethane outer. However, these often snapped in the centre, so metal core wheels came into production as an alternative with greater brawn. Commonly, these are made of double machined aluminium and double urethane tyres.

Alongside the basic components that now define a reliable stunt scooter, there?s a host of accessories available, too. Stunt pegs, for example, are rarely sold with pre-built scooter setups, but are an essential part of the complete package. Attached to the axle bolts, they help the rider grind against smooth surfaces, as opposed to using the bottom of the deck itself (and potentially ruining it).

It wouldn?t be right to have an extreme scooter market this lux without having some dope scooter riders to make the most of it. Thanks to a few years of practice on quality setups, there?s plenty people turning scootering into a fully-fledged and respected action sport.

Tricks can be as simple as bunny-hopping on a back wheel or jumping off small ramps at the skatepark. There?s a whole other level of scootering, though, that?s not for the faint-hearted or unskilled. Dakota Schuetz, for example, recently landed himself in the Guinness Book of World Records for completing 15 backflips in one minute. Sponsored by established brand Lucky, Schuetz is a fine example of a sportsman making ends meet and more by riding scooters professionally and hitting new heights. With scootering now being accepted as part of long-established extreme sports events such as X Games, it?s a new era for the recreation, and it just keeps getting bigger.

Sponsored scooter teams in general are making their mark across the globe, with thousands of young people trying desperately to perfect their skills and be exposed enough to earn a coveted place. Seldom few are able to make the grade (especially with the popularity of scootering pushing the bar even higher), but those who do are rewarded with fame and adoration by their peers, let alone the world travel and other
generous perks.

Madd Gear arguably sponsors the most famous bunch of pros on the scene, with their riders, such as Terry Price, reaching celebrity status amongst its followers. With teams in the US, UK, EU and Australia, their popularity spans the globe and their trademark skull logo can be seen in pretty much any skate shop that you care to visit. Even boasting an enviable women?s team (which is still pretty rare in the sport), they?re the trailblazers of scootering and show no sign of slowing down.

With scooters invading every street, skatepark and school playground, they are fast becoming one of the most popular extreme sports of the moment, even overturning firm favourites like skateboarding and BMXing. Not bad for a supposed ?fad?, there?s really no telling how far scootering will go? But we?re predicting that it?s not nearly over yet.

INAUGURATION WATCH: Tradition renewed, church trip

WASHINGTON (AP) ? AP journalists are fanning out across the capital to cover Inauguration Day as part of a running feed of content and analysis. Here are their reports, which will be updated through the day.

___

ON STAGE

President Barack Obama is on the podium, greeting supporters and colleagues, and ready to be inaugurated for his second term ? or, at least, "inaugurated," since the official ceremony was conducted Sunday indoors. Today's ceremony is the public version.

___

A SEA, NOT AN OCEAN

So, just how many people are on the National Mall for President Barack Obama's second inaugural ceremony?

A lot ? but probably not the roughly 1.8 million who jammed it four years ago.

In hours before Obama's public swearing-in, the crowd extends from the Capitol and beyond the Washington Monument to around the reflecting pool in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

But, though the crowd has grown thicker this morning ? especially beyond the ticketed section ? it doesn't seem as packed as in 2008.

The Presidential Inaugural Committee has announced that the non-ticketed public viewing areas on the National Mall east of 7th Street are full and now closed.

___

COOPERATE, PLEASE

"I hope the people in the Capitol can work together so we can get some things accomplished." ? Lolita Allen, 50, from Detroit, who said she and some friends made a last-minute decision on Friday to drive to Washington for the inauguration.

? Sam Hananel ? Twitter http://twitter.com/SHananelAP

___

ALMOST TIME

Former presidents and celebrities. Supreme Court justices. Politicians of all stripes. And masses of American humanity.

It's almost time for the presidential inauguration. Bands are playing, and everyone's almost ready for the way that Americans renew the executive-branch portion of their democracy ? and renew the promises of their country ? as they have for more than 200 years.

___

GOTTA GO

Time for the all-important porta-potty report: There are lots and lots of them, up and down each side of the Mall, which means it takes a lot more time to get a cup of coffee then it does, well, to no longer have one.

___

SOME OPPOSITION

Two signs held by people on Pennsylvania Avenue going toward the Capitol: "God Hates Obama" and "America Is Doomed."

? Darlene Superville ? Twitter http://twitter.com/dsupervilleap

___

HEADED FOR THE HILL

President Barack Obama is headed to Capitol Hill now for his inauguration ceremony. He's traveling along Pennsylvania Avenue, a road lined with onlookers and all types of military personnel and police officers.

___

GOING MADISONIAN?

Michael Oreskes, the AP's senior managing editor for U.S. news and author of a book on how the U.S. Constitution functions in society, offers this long-term look at what Barack Obama is expected to say today:

___

Many of Obama's more liberal supporters complained in his first term that he wasn't tough enough, or partisan enough. That he was too ready to compromise on everything from health care to economic stimulus. Since his re-election he has projected a sense that he will be playing a stronger hand in his second term and will be tougher. Perhaps so.

But today, to hear his staff tell it, Obama, the former constitutional law professor, will channel James Madison and speak about the centrality of compromise.

"He is going to say that our political system does not require us to resolve all of our differences or settle all of our disputes," says his adviser, David Plouffe, "but it is absolutely imperative that our leaders try and seek common ground when it can and should exist. That s going to be a very important part of the speech."

That is the essence of the system Madison and his colleagues designed and enshrined in the Constitution, a complicated scheme of government that Americans have found frustrating at various times in the nation's history.

It is a comment on our age that a re-elected president needs to use a healthy dose of his widely watched speech to make the case for it all over again.

? Michael Oreskes ? Twitter http://twitter.com/MichaelOreskes

___

DOING IT AGAIN

The latest on the day from AP National Political Editor Liz Sidoti:

___

Sure, today is about history. Inaugurations are a tradition nearly as old as the country itself.

But today's also all for show. It's like so much of our politics these days.

Consider that the president already is one day into his second term. He took the oath of office during a private ceremony on Sunday at the White House to adhere to the Constitution's mandate that presidents start their terms on Jan. 20. Now, he'll do it again in public before hundreds of thousands of people, and millions more watching from home. There will be no suspense. There will be no climax. We know what's going to happen, because it already did.

Just about the only things we don't know:

?What exactly the president will say in his inaugural address.

?What designer the first lady will wear to the balls.

?Liz Sidoti ? Twitter http://twitter.com/lsidoti

___

PASTOR'S WORDS

President Barack Obama and his family are done with the church services and headed for the rest of their day. At the service, Pastor Andy Stanley asked what people do when they realize they are the most powerful person in the room.

"You leverage that power for the benefit of other people in the room," he said. "Jesus would say to do less than that would be to declare yourself greater than me."

To the president, Stanley said: "Mr. President, you have an awfully big room. My prayer to you is to leverage that power for the stewardship of our nation."

After that, Obama stood to receive a blessing from Bishop Vashti McKenzie.

BIPARTISAN COFFEE

"Headed to the (at)WhiteHouse with my wife Diana for coffee with the President, Vice President and their lovely wives." ? Tweet from House Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va.

? Jim Kuhnhenn ? Twitter http://twitter.com/jkuhnhenn

___

WHAT IT FEELS LIKE

It's either a ghost town or a party, depending on where you are in the nation's capital.

Sherry Watkins, 51, and her daughter Cathleen, 17, of nearby Centreville, Va., breezed onto trains with little apparent delay at the Vienna Metro station in northern Virginia, and reminisced about the mob scene of 2009. "Four years ago, it was all standing and we couldn't get our hands up" on the Metro, Sherry Watkins says.

Indeed, by mid-morning, Metro subway trains through downtown Washington are no more crowded than they would be on a typical workday ? except virtually no one was going to work. Although Metro is urging riders coming in from the suburbs not to change trains, passengers had little trouble switching at the busy Metro Center station.

Terry Alexander, a Democratic state representative from South Carolina, and his wife, Starlee Alexander, were taking a leisurely ride from their downtown hotel to Union Station. Four years ago, they had to ride a bus to the Pentagon from their Virginia hotel and walk across the 14th Street Bridge to the National Mall. "This is calm," Terry Alexander says. "Last time, we couldn't even get down in the tunnel to get to the trains."

The east side of Capitol Hill is virtually empty, devoid of people for several square blocks, except for police officers. It was the west side of Capitol Hill that was jammed, as people waited to get into the secure area to watch Obama's public swearing-in. Near the podium, folding chairs hold blue blankets and place cards. Former Democratic leader Tom Daschle is to sit next to Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The president and vice president get padded, wing back style blue chairs.

Parts of the parade route also are filling up. Thousands of people are waiting in security lines that stretched a block to gain access to spots that are accessible to the general public without a special ticket. And the crowd is growing thicker around the National Mall. Long lines snake from a refreshment stand near the National Air and Space Museum.

Michael Kimbro of Atlanta, Ga., has been in the line for an hour and is still 30 feet from the stand's window. "It's a little frustrating," Kimbro says, "but it's well worth it."

?Matthew Barakat, Stephen Ohlemacher, Ben Nuckols, Donna Cassata, Richard Lardner

___

'MORE THAN THE HERE AND NOW'

"It's really important for her to understand that her potential is endless. You have so much to live and look forward to, for yourself personally, for our country ? just to see that there's more than the here and now." ? Kenya Strong, a 37-year-old financial analyst, on her daughter's attendance at the 2013 inauguration.

Skip Job Hunting, Have Informational Interviews Instead | Business ...

I had been living in Indianapolis for a year, working as the crisis communication director for the state health department, when I realized I didn?t know anyone in the city, other than my co-workers. I wanted to break into the marketing world, but also knew better than to try to beat my head against the fortress walls that seemed to surround it.

I didn?t know anyone to help me, so I thought I?d do something audacious: I emailed the CEO of the city?s largest PR firm. He was a columnist in our local business newspaper, and we shared a lot of the same ideas and habits as fellow writers.

Skip Job Hunting, Have Informational Interviews Instead image shutterstock 101382517 300x200I introduced myself, and asked if he would be available to talk with me so I could learn about the industry and my new hometown. I was surprised when I received a reply a couple hours later, inviting me to his office. As we talked, Bruce told me how he got his start and what ultimately led him to open his own firm. He told me about people to talk to, traps to avoid, and what kinds of things I should be looking for and asking about.

Bruce said he was happy to meet with me, because this was how he got his own start when he moved to Indianapolis nearly 15 years before. He did informational interview after informational interview, always asking the same kinds of questions. After three months, Bruce had three job offers and enough offers of freelance work to keep him busy 40 hours a week, all without applying for a single job.

He ended up running the PR department for a local hospital, which led to him starting his own agency a few years later. Because of what his own informational interviews led to, he always agreed to meet with people who asked for the same thing.

Bruce has since become a good friend, and we still meet on occasion to discuss writing, PR, and social media. And that meeting taught me all about the importance of informational interviews myself, and what it can do for networking and personal branding.

If you want to use informational interviews, here are five tactics you need to master:

  1. Ask how the other person got started. Believe it or not, a lot of people forget this. I?ve had dozens of people come to me for the same interviews, and only a few asked me about my beginnings. We learn through stories, even better than getting straight up advice. Ask people to tell you their stories and you?ll glean some valuable lessons about what to do and not do. Most people?s lives can serve as morality plays to our own lives, so take advantage of that.
  2. Take careful notes. If nothing else, you look like you?re paying attention. But more importantly, the people you talk to will interrupt their story to say ?you need to speak to so-and-so.? Write that name down, and anything else they tell you about that person.
  3. Never mention open positions at their company. Otherwise that sounds like the only thing you?re looking for, and they?ll feel like you took advantage of them. It may be tempting. You may even be the ideal fit for that position. But don?t do it. If they mention it, just say, ?I saw that on your website, but I didn?t want to mention it because I didn?t want you to think that?s why I was here. My goal was to meet with you, not ask for a job.?
  4. Always, always, ALWAYS ask ?Who else should I talk to?? This is the chance to tap into their own networks. Most people will just suggest you call them and ?mention my name.? More often than not, this is not helpful. Ask for email introductions. Warm introductions like this are better than cold calls. If they?re not willing to do it, then call or email the person anyway. Be sure to mention the other person?s name early, not at the end. They may discard your email if they don?t know why you?re reaching out to them.
  5. Stay in touch. Some of these people, just by virtue of their being influencers in their field and the community, could be powerful mentors and allies. Keep in touch with them via email, let them know what you?re doing, and get together for coffee or lunch every 3 ? 6 months. If the relationship progresses, make it a monthly thing. Ask them to be a mentor and try to learn as much as possible from them. (Read Keith Ferrazzi?s books Never Eat Alone and Who?s Got Your Back for more on this kind of networking and mentoring.)

The informational interview is a great way to start building the foundations of a strong network that opens up all new kinds of opportunities you?d otherwise spend years trying to build. Be bold, be brave, and even be a little audacious. Reach out to someone you might never be able to get ahold of if you were a freelancer, salesperson, or job hunter.

Find this person on LinkedIn or Twitter, or send an email, and invite them to coffee. Tell them you just want to have an informational interview, so you can learn more about them, the industry, and the community. And see what happens from there.

The worst they can say is no. But the best they can do can be life changing.

CIA officials invisible at Washington premiere of bin Laden film

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - There were journalists in droves, glasses of wine proffered by waiters and hors d'oeuvres devised by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck at the Washington premiere of a movie about the CIA, but prominent agency officials were nowhere to be seen.

Although official records show the spy agency cooperated generously with the makers of "Zero Dark Thirty," which dramatizes the 10-year hunt for Osama bin Laden, the movie's graphic depictions of torture have made it a political hot potato of the kind Washington thrives on but which mystifies Hollywood.

Senator Dianne Feinstein, who chairs the Senate Intelligence Committee, is among those attacking the film, which in its opening scenes suggests the interrogation methods produced information that helped the CIA find bin Laden.

Feinstein's committee has launched a review of CIA dealings with the film's director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal.

Introducing the film on Tuesday evening, Bigelow said the Capitol Hill criticism was, "First of all...surprising, but I also respect their opinions and I think that unfortunately the film was kind of mischaracterized."

Boal mused about the fuss over a movie that has not even opened yet in theaters nationwide and noted the movie makes clear that many different intelligence-gathering methods led to the discovery of bin Laden's compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan.

Outside the premiere, at Washington's Newseum on Pennsylvania Avenue between Capitol Hill and the White House, a line of protesters dressed as detainees in orange jumpsuits and black hoods, held signs denouncing torture.

"Zero Dark Thirty" is not unkind to the CIA: it shows the extraordinary lengths operatives and analysts went to find the al Qaeda chief, with several dying during the manhunt.

A person close to the filmmakers confirmed that invitations to the screening had been sent to CIA officials but it was not apparent that any had attended.

The CIA had no immediate comment.

The absence of identifiable CIA officials at the event contrasted sharply with the audience at a Washington screening in October of "Argo," which depicts how agency operatives and Canadian diplomats smuggled a group of U.S. diplomats out of Tehran during the 1979-1981 Iran hostage crisis.

The Argo premier was attended by then CIA director David Petraeus, his deputy (and current acting CIA chief) Michael Morell as well as other senior intelligence officials. Pictures of Petraeus with the actor Bryan Cranston are posted on the Internet.

One U.S. official familiar with the matter said because of the political heat surrounding "Zero Dark Thirty," intelligence officials who were invited probably opted to stay home.

"Given all the political nonsense surrounding the movie, folks likely decided to wait for it to come out on cable on-demand," the official said.

The CIA wasn't always so stand-offish toward the movie.

Agency documents released to the conservative group Judicial Watch showed that senior officials at both the CIA and the Pentagon, including Morell and Michael Vickers, now the Pentagon's intelligence chief, met with Bigelow and Boal while they were developing the film.

Of course, no one can say there were no spies in the audience on Tuesday night. They could have been under cover.

Trust us, this is something every marketing or technical manager needs to know about so you can determine the right time for your business to invest in it.

In a nutshell, responsive design is a development strategy? that results in a single website that automatically resizes and reconfigures to adjust to various screen sizes and devices. This means that one single website can look equally amazing on a desktop, laptop, tablet, mobile phone and everything in between. Given that by 2014 mobile internet browsing is predicted to take over desktop internet usage (Source: Microsoft Tag, 2012), this is something you simply can?t afford to ignore.

Example responsive designBenefits of responsive design

Building a site using responsive design techniques can offer many benefits to your website, user experience and your return on investment.

  • Future-friendly: It seems like a new mobile device is introduced every week. Tailoring your site to deliver an excellent experience across every new device is nearly impossible, unless you invest in responsive design. Responsive design implements forward-thinking technology and allows sites to work on devices now and in the future. Because responsive design groups similar devices together by screen size, it is flexible enough to respond to any new device the market introduces.
  • Full site experience for mobile users: If you have a mobile site, you know that you are able to cater to the screen size of your audience but have to minimize content. This means that users are getting a less robust version of your site, which can impact your ability to achieve all of your site goals. With responsive design, the mobile experience delivers the full site, but with fewer bells and whistles so the site is uncluttered and easy to use.
  • Competitive edge: Chances are your competitors haven?t yet invested in responsive design, which gives you a perfect opportunity to deliver a superior web experience to all users. Because almost half of consumers are unlikely to return to a mobile site if it didn?t work properly during their last visit (Source: Gomez), this is your moment to outshine your competitors.
  • Search Engine Optimization: Building a website using responsive design is beneficial to your search engine rankings and Google endorses it as an industry best-practice. Using a single set of URLs for your website traffic, as opposed to splitting URLs between a standard site and mobile site, means consolidating your traffic numbers to one URL, which increases your website?s credibility and search engine ranking.
  • Save money: An investment in responsive design is just that, an investment. However, this investment will pay off in spades in the near and long term because you will not have to worry about how your site adapts to new devices entering the marketplace.
  • Integration with CMS platforms: Several CMS platforms, such as Sitefinity, seamlessly integrate responsive design code, saving development time and ultimately saving you money.

Responsive design or mobile design?

You may have already invested in a mobile site and, if so, that is great. For some businesses, it?s important to maintain a mobile site because the end user has very specific, narrow goals. But for most businesses, the ability to deliver a full site experience to all users ? no matter their device ? is a major win for both users and businesses.

What should you consider before implementing responsive design?

Responsive design isn?t right for every business. For example, if you have a website design that is outdated or your website isn?t exactly where you need it to be, you certainly don?t want to invest in recoding the site using that design. In some cases, pairing a website redesign and responsive design is the perfect combination to give you a fresh new look that supports your business on all platforms and devices.

What?s next?

So now that you know enough to be dangerous, let us help you decide whether it?s the right time for your business to pursue responsive design.

Simple Tips Your Own Home Improvement Projects |

When it comes to home improvement, it can prove difficult to find the information that you need. If you don?t arm yourself with the right sources and knowledge, home improvement can be a nightmare. This article will provide you with the information that you need to get started and complete your own project.

Decorative Pillows

You can make decorative pillows easily. Make your own decorative pillows by putting cool designs on them. This will help dress up your teen?s room and add a splash of personality.

Before painting any surface, always wipe down the surface to remove stains, dirt or grease. This helps the paint stick to the walls and may even save you from having to apply a second coat.

Use a porch light with a motion sensor to cut down on your electric bill. You can manually turn the light on and adjust sensitivity most of the time.

Front Lawn

Landscaping is an important aspect to consider when renovating your home. Your front lawn is the first thing people see when they look at your home, and a beautiful front lawn can impress your neighbors and any visitors. Not enough people focus on their lawns. Neat, green grass, blooming flowers, stone walkways ? these things really add a lot of appeal.

Utilizing simple methods of home improvement can dramatically increase the amount you save on your utility bill. Using Energy Star certified light bulbs decreases carbon emissions while using 75% less energy than incandescent light bulbs. Insulating your hot water heater will prevent your water heater from wasting energy and save you money.

A well-built, immaculate front door can raise a property?s value by up to 10%. You can update the look of your door by investing in a relatively inexpensive new doorknob and lock. You might be surprised at the variety of available shapes and finishes.

Think about putting in insulation whenever you plan on renovating your home. Use the opportunity to add weather stripping to every door and window. This helps seal up the air from entering your home, which in turn allows your cooling and heating systems to function a lot better. That will also lower your energy bill.

Before winter, take steps that prevent your pipes from freezing in frigid temperatures. Insulating the lines is a good way to prevent the lines from freezing. You can purchase various types of insulation to install around your pipes for protection. This way, you can prevent accidents due to frozen or burst pipes.

As you engage the services of a contractor, you need to reduce every detail of the job to a written contract. You should also insist on a timeline and a payment schedule.

You should put windows in the bathroom for more ventilation. The humidity created by hot showers can create very fertile grounds for mold to breed. Even with repeated coats of paint on your bathroom wall, you cannot sufficiently kill the mold. The correct answer is to prevent the problem from starting. Vents and windows can effectively dehumidify the space.

Change the accessories to give each room of your home a fresh look. It?s almost unbelievable how greatly placing a new picture on the wall or some new colorful pillows on the furniture can change the appearance of a room. Get new draperies in a lush fabric and vibrant color, then add a vase, a set of pillows and a lamp in the same color, and your room will look like you paid a designer to re-do it.

Prior to making home customizations, consider what style suits you. The decorating theme you choose will narrow down your choices in several different areas. Without a plan, you can easily end up with mixed styles. Mistakes like this one can result in you having to backtrack and are also a waste of money.

Do not underestimate the amount of effort that your project will require. You need to take the time and write down all of the things that need done. It is also good to get other people?s opinions in case that you missed something. This way you will have all of the things that need to be completed in front of you and perhaps you can save some money.

Get exhaust fans for your bathroom, kitchen and laundry room. This will keep you safe by reducing your risk of mold as well as removing hazardous fumes from your home that are associated with cooking. You will also keep wetness from forming in the walls of your home that can cause rot.

Energy Efficient

Try replacing your existing light bulbs with bulbs that are more energy efficient. These bulbs reduce your cost in electricity bills, and they are environmentally friendly; they also have a longer lifespan than the traditional light bulbs, and they are higher in lumens per watt. Use modern, energy efficient bulbs instead.

Consider replacing your front door entryway with a steel door one for an easy way to improve the look of your home. Steel doors increase the value of your home. Steel doors are attractive and potential buyers like their looks. If that isn?t enough benefit, they also improve a home?s energy efficiency.

As previously advised, home improvement does not have to be hard. If you take advantage of the suggestions in the previous paragraphs, you can make sure your home improvement projects go as smoothly as possible. By incorporating the tips and techniques found in the above article, you will be well on your way to completing any home improvement project.

DIY Van de Graaff Generator using a Candy Container

DIY Van de Graaff Generator using a Candy ContainerVan de Graaff generators are science education staples to demonstrate static electricity. There are many commercial versions that are quite expensive, but electronics project weblog eLabz figured out how to make a budget version from a $2 M&Ms holiday-themed candy container, PVC pipe, two low-voltage DC motors, a prescription pill bottle, and a few other small electronics parts.

You can see the full schematic and step-by-step instructions at the site link below, but what you're basically doing is drilling access holes in all the containers, add the DC motors, and solder the motors, switch, and power connector together.

The key in this build is the $2 metal M&Ms container which is an almost perfect sphere and can build up enough of an electric charge to create sparks. The low power levels in this build shouldn't pose a huge threat, but always make sure you're following safety procedures when working with electricity.

Anger Management in Your Family - wise self improvement | self ...

Relationships are very fragile and needs one to have some tips to manage anger. A few words are capable of breaking a relationship built for many years. Anger is the main cause for trouble between members of the family. You cannot live in harmony with your family if you don't learn on how to control your anger. Is it really impossible to get rid of anger? It is not impossible; however you can manage it in a manner that will strengthen your relationship rather than breaking it.

Anger will harm you and the people surrounding you. Your children will be fearful and nervous being around you if you have a habit of losing your temper in their presence. It hurts to see your kids avoid you out of fear. This alone is a good reason as to why you should control your anger.

Another reason that should push you to get your anger under control is that anger will also make your own life deplorable. Life cannot be fun if you are angry at the world and everyone around you. This is a bad way to live your life and you are likely to end up depressed.

    How to Manage Your Anger

The first step to managing your anger is to start looking at things from a different point of view. Consider what your child/children or spouse feels about a situation and then sympathize with their way of reasoning. Explain how you perceive their point rather than being hurtful, sarcastic in a discussion and angry. Always remember to tame your temper because it can do a lot of harm to your family life.

At no time should you raise your voice even if you want to express yourself. When it comes to letting them know your feelings, do it in a simple way and remember to give them a reason behind your point. Try to compromise with family members. This is necessary because it enhances a good communication and it prevents you from being selfish. Anger management does not restrict you from expressing your feelings but it controls your tempers and its negative consequences.

Make it clear to a person you hurt in the past out of anger that you are trying to change. The person will be willing to help you control your anger. Therefore discuss about your anger with your spouse if you wronged him or her. Admit that you offended your spouse in the past out of anger and make him or her believe that you really want to change your behavior. By making people understand you have a problem of being bad-tempered they will be willing to help you to manage your anger.

However, if you are dealing with a family member who is quick to anger you have to take an action. It is not good to live in fear with someone because he or she is easily angered. Talk to the person about his or her anger and let the person know that your discomfort is brought about by his or her behavior. Discuss how you will help each other solve the problem.

When dealing with problems within your family, learn to be compromising and be patient with the member causing the problems. Personal desires are not a remedy to family problems.

Hopefully after going through the anger management tips mentioned above, you should be able to solve your family problems.

Fusion Energi Plug-in Hybrid Takes Ford Back to the Top ...

Ford has recently introduced the all new Ford Fusion Energi Plug-in Hybrid. Considered the most fuel efficient car, the hybrid vehicle was unveiled at the Detroit Auto Show earlier on. The Ford Fusion Energi Plug-in Hybrid surpassed expectations as it was only expected to get up to 100 mpg. But Ford has announced the official EPA rating of the car and the vehicle is expected to get up to 108 MPGe in the city, which makes it America?s most fuel-efficient sedan.

You can really know more about the quality of this hybrid if you are comparing it with the other luxury plug-in hybrids like the Chevrolet Volt, which gets only 98 MPGe (combined) or the Toyota Prius Plug-In that offers 95 MPGe.

So basically, the Fusion Energi beats most of its rivals without even breaking a sweat and due to that reason the 2013 Fusion has been voted as the number one Green Car of the Year. The car has even been certified by the US Environmental Protection Agency at up to 108 MPGe, which makes the Fusion Energi Plug-in eligible for America?s most fuel-efficient sedan.

The Fusion Energi is sure to accelerate the company?s sales numbers by at least twice. Ford focuses on fuel economy and customer satisfaction, and the brand new hybrid is its fifth electrified vehicle to launch in the past year. ?It is expected that the car would save customers an estimated $6,850 in fuel costs.

Investing for Impact- What's Possible: The Tides Blog

The term impact investing has been gaining brand value over the past five years. The precursors of community investing and socially responsible investing are ironically being dropped from the conversation as if to imply that impact investing is a brand new phenomenon. While there is innovation inherent in impact investing, it is important to leverage the histories ? good and bad ? from community development, socially responsible investing, and venture philanthropy in order to support the success, sustainability and scale of the larger social benefit marketplace.

The wave of research and marketing for impact investing has been quite impressive, especially in light of the limited quantitative data on the impact of investments made in the space to date. The ?hype? is fueling an entire ecosystem of organizations ? from historical philanthropic institutions to traditional investment banks ? moving at warp speed to become impact investors. These institutions, with their own business models and mission orientation, are coming together and at times colliding in attempts to figure out how we can all work together. It is ?speed dating? at its finest.

The primary topic of our ?first dates? is how we define ?the space.? Each organization has their own definition. The Global Impact Investing Network (GIIN) defines impact investing as investments made into companies, organizations, and funds with the intention to generate measurable social and environmental impact alongside a financial return. ?I define impact investing as any financial investment designed to catalyze social benefit and generate a financial return. Whether the investment has a primary purpose of social or financial return is irrelevant at this point; it just needs to generate the promised return. My focus is on the conscious effort of leveraging varied costs of capital to support a social benefit.

The next ?hot topic? is how we define impact. I have paid less attention to the varied debates, as there are so many evaluation tools, metrics and platforms available. As significant resources move into defining this space, however, it is worth pointing out a few key elements that need to be incorporated into these tools that seems to be missing to date.

I believe that regardless of the tool, we must create context. No story is told in all words or all numbers. The significance of place ? from NYC to Mississippi to Brazil, along with the significance of sector ? from health, to education, to agriculture ? cannot and should not be overlooked. It is the very impact of these factors that can make or break a business and investment.

Impact tools must balance the use of qualitative and quantitative metrics. The tools must provide necessary context to potential investors. Specifically, these tools should provide guidance on business leadership ? who is running the business, their skill set and expected trajectory of success. The context should also highlight sector and geographic trends. There is no such thing as a standard or model business. Finally, the context must include an analysis on the type and amount of capital invested. Too many of the current tools do not take into account the impact of a business that has debt versus equity, as debt typically slows the growth of a business as additional capital becomes harder to acquire. They do not consider the difference between a $100,000 versus $1,000,000 investment. Please note that more money is neither better, nor guarantees greater impact. However, the time and costs associated with effectively utilizing $1M versus $100,000 is significantly longer. Therefore recognized returns on the investment may be slower and at higher risk.

As the ecosystem matures, and we all get to know each other better, I hope there is a shift from over-standardized and prescriptive measures to those that take into account the nuance of the very variables that often determine the success or failure of a business.

Moving forward, the social benefit marketplace, by leveraging a rich history, has tremendous opportunity for growth and market acceptance. In order to insure the scale of the sector, however, there are some additional ?hot topics? to be considered during the courting period.

First, in light of our current economic crisis, grounded in mistrust and abuse, I have been shocked by such little discussion on the role of fiduciary responsibility for impact investors. Balancing financial and social returns is not easy and can often be in stark contrast to one another. We need to honor the healthy tension and be prepared to talk about the strategies and investment decisions that need to be made in order to balance mission and financial returns. This topic is not new as it surfaced with the sale of Ben & Jerry?s and Tom?s of Maine, raising question of how their acquisitions by mainstream companies could still produce a social good. What is required at this juncture is to re-open the conversation and create a baseline of acceptance for how to make such balancing decisions moving forward.

Second, we need to start discussing the costs of doing business. Too often we get overly enamored by the social benefit and do not acknowledge the ?costs of doing good.? In order to insure the sustainability of the sector we need to openly discuss and own the related costs. For example, we continue to read about the excitement around social impact bonds. We talk about the evaluation challenges and identifying the nonprofit partners; however we do not talk about the costs of ?issuance? ? identifying partner organizations, creating and implementing evaluation metrics, managing course correction, etc. If we do not start tracking these costs we run the risk of bankrupting the sector with subsidies that are not sustainable over time.

Third, we need to discuss the role of government and policy. One of the critical success factors of community investing ? the original impact strategy ? was the existence of the Community Reinvestment Act (CRA). CRA served as a catalyst for investors to enter the space with a ?carrot? from the government. In its simplest terms, the review process and point system associated with CRA strongly encouraged traditional institutions to enter neighborhoods they would ordinarily not go into and see that investments can both thrive and survive in low income, marginalized communities. This transformative legislation is at risk of obsolescence. Without such ?carrots? in the investing space, how can we insure the democratization of impact investing and that all communities, not just some, can realize a financial and social benefit from local businesses? With many states shifting to a ?new majority,? it is important that mechanics are in place to support fairness and equality ? core social goods ? at the forefront of investment decisions and the placement of capital.

As a serial entrepreneur and longstanding social investor, I remain optimistic about the opportunities of impact investing. The potential for new market entrants, innovation and increased capital is very exciting. As a participant in similar earlier movements, however, I worry about the ?hype? not transferring to reality and the hopes of dreams of social entrepreneurs, communities in need, and novice investors being dashed.

As we move forward we need to de-prioritize branding the movement and focus on building and sustaining the movement. With the impending fiscal cliff and deteriorating safety nets, our social ills and needs continue to outpace solutions and resources. There is a real need and moral imperative to develop and sustain innovative solutions that generate a social benefit and can sustain themselves over time. We owe it to the ultimate recipients of impact investments, the clients ? mentally ill, physically challenged, formerly incarcerated, those in poverty ? to have hard conversations, raise the bar on our own accountability and build an ecosystem that is more than a temporary solution to long term problems.

T-Mobile confirms appeal over Austria telecom merger

VIENNA (Reuters) - T-Mobile Austria confirmed it had filed an appeal against the allocation of radio frequencies that will result from Hutchison Whampoa's takeover of Orange Austria, in a move that could derail the 1.3 billion euro ($1.7 billion) deal.

A source familiar with the matter had told Reuters last month that the Deutsche Telekom unit planned the appeal over fears it will be at a disadvantage to rivals who will have a head start of up to a year in building next-generation LTE networks.

The ability to build an LTE network, which will offer data speeds up to 10 times those now available, will be a key competitive advantage in Austria's hard-fought telecoms market.

The country's four operators are engaged in a price war as they fight over a population of just 8.4 million, with all-inclusive, no-strings offers available for as little as 7 euros per month.

T-Mobile said on Wednesday it had lodged an appeal on December 31 with Austria's higher administrative court against the decision of the country's telecom control commission, the TKK, for the transfer of frequencies that will accompany the merger.

It said it had asked for the transfer to be put on hold while its legal case is being heard. It said it expected the court to decide within days on whether to grant an injunction in the case, which it thought could last until March or April.

A court spokesman said the court had not yet received the appeal.

Learning Anger Management Skills Can Improve Your LifeAnger management involves a system of psychological therapeutic techniques and exercises by which one with excessive anger can reduce the triggers, degrees, and effects of an angered emotional state.

Stress has been found to have a direct correlation to unmanaged anger and aggression. In fact, trying to suppress or deny your anger can lead to a host of physical complaints, such as headaches, depression, stress, and sleeping or eating difficulties. Anger and stress are highly correlated and the effects of stress on the body are well documented.

    Health

Anger that?s out of control can be destructive, leading to problems in your relationships, at work, in your enjoyment of life and with your health. If your level of anger is high or you tend to express anger in an unhealthy way, make plans to deal with your anger.

    Techniques

By employing various mental techniques, anger management classes attempt to help you see differently the situations that have caused you anger and to change your thinking processes. A common skill used in most anger management programs is learning assertive communication techniques.

Typical anger management techniques are the use of deep breathing and meditation as a means of relaxation.

We see that, with enough will power, we can climb large mountains, so we need to think that anger is just a mountain that we can climb to the top of with simple anger management techniques.

    Counseling

An individual who exhibits behaviors that can lead to harm of another or property damage needs psychological services from a professional trained in anger management. Talk to your health care provider about resources, such as counseling or anger management classes. Getting some anger management counseling is a great idea if you do not know how to control your anger.

    Conclusion

Identify and promote effective anger management methods and techniques. Luckily you CAN learn anger management skills to apply to your family and career lives, and you can improve. Being proactive with anger management will help to ensure it remains a healthy emotion that protects you from unnecessary hurt or threat.
