A five-alarm fire ripped through a warehouse in Chicago?s south side Tuesday night.

?This is a major fire,? the Chicago Fire Department posted on Twitter, adding that the scale of the response ? five alarms plus two ?special? calls for additional trucks -- was ?extremely rare.? About 170 firefighters were on the scene.

?This fire has about one-third of the city fire apparatus at this location,? the department said on Twitter.

"We haven?t had a fire this big in many years," fire department spokesman Larry Langford told?NBC Chicago.

Photos posted on Twitter showed flames towering above the abandoned warehouse. The fire briefly jumped to an adjacent building, causing concern. That neighboring building is a printing company, its owner told NBC Chicago. He expressed concern about chemicals inside that could explode.

Firefighters were also concerned about the nearby location of a fuel pumping station to the east of the warehouse.

The fire department's messages on Twitter highlighted the intensity of the blaze: ?Rear is collapsed. ? North end of building starting to fall. ? (The fire department) will be here for hours.?

The department declared the fire under control early Wednesday. One firefighter was taken to a hospital with a ?minor back issue,? the fire department said.
