DIY Van de Graaff Generator using a Candy ContainerVan de Graaff generators are science education staples to demonstrate static electricity. There are many commercial versions that are quite expensive, but electronics project weblog eLabz figured out how to make a budget version from a $2 M&Ms holiday-themed candy container, PVC pipe, two low-voltage DC motors, a prescription pill bottle, and a few other small electronics parts.

You can see the full schematic and step-by-step instructions at the site link below, but what you're basically doing is drilling access holes in all the containers, add the DC motors, and solder the motors, switch, and power connector together.

The key in this build is the $2 metal M&Ms container which is an almost perfect sphere and can build up enough of an electric charge to create sparks. The low power levels in this build shouldn't pose a huge threat, but always make sure you're following safety procedures when working with electricity.
